Acne and related PIH due to hormonal changes is common skincare among teenagers. Add to that stressful schoolwork, a lack of sleep, and an erratic schedule, and this can only be exacerbated. But skipping the harsh physical scrubs and stripping spot treatments, one must play the long game and maintain a simple and effective skincare routine, a habit that'll keep you in good stead as you age.
If a person starts taking care of their skin at a younger age, it delays the signs of aging and gives them healthy skin by maintaining the teenage glow. But if they only start in their late 20s, it's almost impossible to reverse the damage that has already happened.
Here are 7 Essential Tips to Get that Teenage Glow!
-
Using a Gentle pH Balanced Cleanser
Over-washing your face or using a harsh cleanser can result in a damaged skin barrier, which can sabotage skin health in the long run. A properly-formulated gentle pH-balanced face wash will help retain and replenish your skin’s moisture balance and avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils.
We recommend using lukewarm water while cleansing and using gentle, circular motions, making sure to reach every inch of your face. Remember to always remove sunscreen and makeup with a cleanser before going to bed.
- Exfoliate once/twice a week
Gently exfoliating once or twice a week helps in removing dead skin cells and avoiding clogged pores.
We recommend using a mild chemical exfoliating toner for improving your complexion, glow, and fading other scars and blemishes or sunspots that may be there on your face.
Avoid physical store-bought scrubs as they are too harsh for the skin and can potentially cause micro-tears at the skin’s surface.
- Moisturise regularly (including lips)
Moisturise your skin twice daily, especially after using a cleanser, to keep your skin hydrated and prevent Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). Use a lightweight moisturiser to avoid a heavy sticky feeling. Using a moisturiser regularly will help maintain oil-water balance and ensure a natural glow and a healthier skin.
Do not forget to wear lip balm to keep them soft and supple. During the day, use an SPF lip balm to provide adequate sun protection to the lips.
- Protection from the sun
Using a broad spectrum sunscreen with advanced UV filters will give you solid protection from UVA and UVB rays. We recommend using a lightweight sunscreen with an SPF of 40 or higher and PA++++.
Wear hats and full sleeve clothing to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun rays. And yes wear your sunscreen no matter the season!
- Be consistent with your skincare
As with other aspects of life, consistency and patience are key when it comes to your skincare. Give too many surprises, and your skin will react. Remember that skincare is a journey!
How you are using skincare is as important as what you are using. Stick to a routine and give it time to show results. Do not switch products too often.
- Do not touch your face frequently
Clean your hands before you touch your face or do makeup. Touching your face frequently spreads germs, dirt, and oil and can so often result in acne and pimples.
And picking at your pimples is a Big No-No! This can create scars, spread infection and cause dark spots (hyperpigmentation).
- Stay away from fragrance and essential oils in facecare
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, fragrances (including essential oils) are considered the leading cause of allergic reactions on the skin. People with inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, or rosacea, eczema, psoriasis may see their condition worsen with fragranced products. For those with darker skin tones, this can mean having to deal with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or scarring, which can take many months to fade.
Our suggestion – Stay away from all fragrances in facecare!
